Oscars 2023: How All Quiet on the Western Front changed our image of war

Netflix's Oscar-nominated epic All Quiet on the Western Front tells the story of World War I from the losing, German perspective, showing the "Great War" as unheroic, muddy, bloody and brutish. The filmmakers drew on the original 1929 German novel by Erich Maria Remarque and two earlier film adaptations which, together, helped change our vision of war in popular culture.
