The walls are the true symbol of Ávila. We see them from afar. They are worth to the city to be considered as one of the best preserved fortified cities in Europe.

Listed as a World Heritage Site, Ávila features cobbled streets, medieval sites, valuable churches and tasty gastronomy, all in a very peaceful atmosphere.

The ramparts and the mystique of the city

The emblematic walls of Ávila, 1,700 meters long, are open to the public. They offer breathtaking views of the cathedral, the Mercado Grande square and the city surroundings. Avila Cathedral, considered the first Gothic cathedral in Spain, leans against the ramparts because it was also designed as a fortress.
Saint Teresa of Avila is the other symbol of the city. She is present everywhere: from sculptures in her honor to traditional pastries called yemas de Santa Teresa. You can visit the Santa Teresa convent, established in what was his birthplace. The Santa Teresa Museum adjoins the convent.
The Santo Tomás Royal Monastery, San Vicente Basilica and San Pedro Basilica are also worth a visit. To learn more about mysticism and its representatives in Ávila, inquire at the mystical interpretation center.

The oldest Spanish Gothic cathedral

Its construction began following the Romanesque style, then Master Frichel took over the project and built one of the first Gothic cathedrals in Castile.

The chevet of the cathedral being integrated into the wall, it belonged to the defensive ensemble of the city. It has two facades: the main one, flanked by two towers – one of which is unfinished – which gives it the appearance of a church-fortress, and that of the apostles, on one side. It is in the shape of a Latin cross. The coro and the cloister were added later, in the 16th century. The choir contains a magnificent altarpiece, made by Vasco de la Zarza, which includes paintings by Berruguete and Juan de Borgoña. The stained glass windows date from the 15th century. The ambulatory houses Vasco de la Zarza's masterpiece, the tomb of El Tostado, in alabaster.

Special moments

Ávila is a peaceful city that invites you to enjoy time in peace. This feeling of peace is particularly palpable from the top of the Cuatro Postes belvedere, where you can watch a superb sunset. Located outside the ramparts, this place also offers a superb panorama of the illuminated ramparts at night.
Mealtime is also a special moment in Ávila. Its meats are very famous, such as the rib of beef, which you will ideally accompany with the famous beans of El Barco de Ávila. For dessert, yemas de Santa Teresa (egg yolk and sugar confectionery) will delight you. These dishes are part of the “DegustÁvila” menus that are offered to you in many restaurants in the centre.
As for the festivities, note in your calendar the Medieval Days, held on the first weekend of September, the moving Holy Week (in March or April) and the summer evenings, when plays are performed on the walls.
