Boris Johnson apologises over Downing Street party: 'I believed it was a work event'

Boris Johnson has apologised for attending a party in the garden of No10 Downing Street.

"I believed it was a work event," the Prime Minister said. "With hindsight, I should have sent everyone back inside, I should have found some other way to thank them and I should have recognised that even if it could be said to be technically within the guidance, there would be millions and millions of people who simply would not see it that way."

Offering an apology to the Commons and the public, he adds: "All I ask is Sue Gray can be allowed to continue with her inquiry so the full facts can be found."
