Mikko Franck conducts the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France performing l'Apprenti sorcier, composed in1896 by Paul Dukas (1865-1935). Excerpt from the concert recorded on 21 décembre 2018, live from de Radio France Auditorium.

L'apprenti sorcier, symphonic scherzo inspired inspired by the eponymous poem "Der Zauberlehrling" [The Sorcerer's Apprentice] by Goethe.

The fire at the annual charity event Le Bazar de la Charité on 4 May 1897 (117 deaths) brought about various drastic security measures in Paris: the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire was forced to leave the reputable hall of the the rue Bergère, the concert initially planned on 15 May at the Nouveau Théâtre was moved to 18 May – Franck, Ropartz, d’Indy, Savard, Bréville, Fauré, Bordes, Duparc, Chausson and Dukas were all present. In Dukas's written account published in the weekly publication La Revue Hebdomadaire, he describes the reception of his symphonic scherzo as "indulgent", deadpan and almost forgetful of the recent events. His second composition inspired by the works of Goethe, after Goetz von Berlichingen (overture, 1884), Dukas's work was met with great and immediate success, almost obscuring his other symphonic works.

Performed throughout the world (by d’Indy in Boston in 1905, Mahler in New York in 1909, and by Disney in Fantasia in 1940), the work was transcribed for two pianos by Dukas and first performed by Diémer et Cortot.
