L'épave du Crested Eagle à Zuydcoote ...

The Fort des Dunes (1878-1880) was used as the headquarters of the 12th Division d'Infanterie Motorisée during Operation Dynamo (1940). Between June 2 and 3, 1940, the fort was constantly bombarded by Stukas and artillery, killing General Guillaume Janssen and many of his men. They are now buried at the French War Cemetery "Fort des Dunes".

During the German occupation, a radar installation of the Würzburg See Reise Fumo 21 type was placed on top of the fort. The barracks were used as a warehouse for the submarine base at Dunkerque. On September 6, 1944, 8 resistance members were executed here. In May 1945, this fort served as an internment camp for 10,000 German prisoners of war.
