The Tyranny of Merit is the most recent book written by the renowned North American
philosopher Michael Sandel. In this video, Sandel examines the terms addressed in his
work. What is justice? What role does humanity play in civic life? What does success
mean to him? The professor reflects on some of the ideas that have become
entrenched in Western societies and calls for civic dialogue to tackle two of the issues
that concern him: economic inequality and political polarization. “Meritocratic
competence teaches us to think of our success and of our achievements as our own
doing. And this points us away from the common good. It leads us to forget our
indebtedness to those who make our achievements possible: family, teachers,
community, country, the times in which we live”, he asserts.

Michael Sandel teaches political philosophy at Harvard University, and he received the
Princess of Asturias Award in Social Sciences in 2018. He is one of the most well-
known philosophers of our time. His course “Justice” is the most popular in Harvard’s
history. He is the author of Public Philosophy and What Money Can’t Buy. His works
have been translated into more than 25 different languages. In his work, he discusses
topics such as justice, ethics, democracy and market influence. He relates political
philosophy to the moral and civic questions of our time.
