Moïse Kapend Tshombe was a Congolese businessman and politician. He was one of the most notable and  controversial politicians that emerged in the Congo before independence, and went on to influence the politics of the country especially in the early years of independence. Tshombe was president of the break away State of Katanga from 1960 to 1963 and later prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 1964 to 1965. A member of the Lunda ethnic group, Tshombe was born into a prominent Lunda family in Musumba, Belgian Congo on the 10th of November 1919.
