The Libertarian Utopia That Almost Caused A War

Located hundreds of kilometres south of Fiji and Tonga in the Minerva Reefs are almost relevant. However, in 1971, a group of ambitious American libertarians attempted to form their own micronation on the sunken atoll. The Republic of Minerva would have been a libertarian utopia; with no taxes or government intervention of any kind. Fortunately (unless you’re a right-wing libertarian) the plans ran aground as the nations surrounding the Minerva Reefs were less than impressed with their new neighbour. But although everyone agrees that The Republic of Minerva does not have a claim on the reefs, the area remains disputed today with both Tonga and Fiji claiming sovereignty over the reefs.
