Avoid very wet areas completely and if the deck is in a shady area be prepared to treat and clean the wood annually. Draw your deck to scale on paper as accurately as you can, remember it's the deck boarding that governs the size of the deck. If you're laying your deck over lawn, dig out to a depth of 50mm and cover the ground with Wickes Landscaping Fabric. Wall Plate If the decking is joining onto a house, the first thing you’ll need to do is attach a wall plate. To plan around a step or a sill take an off cut of deck board, put it under the lowest part of the sill and draw a line underneath. When screwing the wall plate into place use washers to separate the timber from the wall so water doesn’t get trapped. Outer Frame & Internal Bearers To ensure rain water runs off your deck and away from the house, allow for a slight fall in the level of the deck frame (approximately 2mm for every meter of decking). You may also need to extend the lengths of your bearers if the deck you’re planning is longer than your bearers. Start by measuring, extending and fitting your outer frame before your internal joists. Your joists should be at 400mm intervals. Once all your joists are in place attach noggins for extra support. The noggins should be staggered so you don’t have to screw screws to attach them. Once all the noggins are in place, do your final levelling. Deck Boards If your deck boards fit perfectly on your decking without having to trim any down then start laying them by the house. If your deck boards need to be trimmed down, use a hand saw or circular saw. Keep spaces even between adjacent boards by using a spacer from an off cut of timber. If you need to cut a deck board to accommodate an obstacle use a jigsaw.
