If you are asked to
If you are asked to reflect a shape in the x-axis then the x-axis is acting as the mirror line. Also if you are asked to reflect a shape in the y -- axis then the y -- axis is acting as the mirror line. It's a good idea to draw a line over the x-axis or y-axis in a different colour to make it clear where the mirror line is.
So in example 1, you are asked to reflect a triangle in the x-axis. First of all, make the mirror line clear by drawing over the x axis in a different colour. Now count the distance of each corner to the mirror line and count the same distances away from the mirror line. Once all 3 corners have been reflected join the points up with a ruler to get your x-axis reflection.
In example 2, you are asked to reflect a quadrilateral in the y-axis. First of all, make the mirror line clear by drawing over the y-axis in a different colour. Now count the distance of each corner to the mirror line and count the same distances away from the mirror line. Once all 4 corners have been reflected join the points up with a ruler to get your y-axis reflection.
