A Cape Seal is an innovative pavement preservation technique which combines the benefits of a chip seal and slurry seal. A chip seal (also referred to as "stone & oil" or "tar & chip”)using a polymer-modified asphalt emulsion seals cracks and provides a layer of aggregate adding body to the pavement. A slurry seal is then applied, sealing in the aggregate chip seal and leaving a durable smooth, black pavement surface with high-skid resistance.
Cape Seals are extremely cost-effective in comparison with thin hot mix asphalt (HMA) overlays, and are appropriate for rural roads or in urban settings where curb reveal must be maintained.
