Modi (right) phoned Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif (left)  just hours before jetting off to ask if he could make an impromptu stop. Sharif replied: 'Please come and have tea with me'. The impromptu visit could signal a thawing in relations between the two countries who have fought three wars against each other since India gained independence from Britain in 1947. One of the first public signs the meeting was taking place was when Modi tweeted that he was 'looking forward to meeting Sharif' while on a visit to the Afghan capital of Kabul.
