More than a Monolith by Sophia Lin explores how people view Asian Americans as one large group of forever foreigners, creating harmful stereotypes and inciting violence among minority communities, before coming up with some solutions that we can apply in order to ease these ethnic tensions. Through examples and stories, she elucidates the problem with the Model Minority Myth, and highlights ways we can bring awareness to the issue and break stereotypes through involvement and service in broader communities. Sophia Lin is a rising high school sophomore who enjoys using her artwork and voice to bring awareness of social issues and advocate for underserved communities. Sophia is a co-founder, dance instructor and VP of Outreach for iReach, a youth service organization with the goal of improving Arizona youth education in art and STEM. Sophia is an ambassador for the nonprofit organization Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona that delivers therapeutic arts programs and uses the healing power of the arts to transform and inspire lives. Sophia won 2nd Place in the State Speech Championship for Original Oratory, and she was awarded first runner-up in the Miss Arizona's Outstanding Teen Competition. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
