In this video, current situation of Raya and Canola rates has been discussed.
Raya/canola crop is commonly planted through broadcast method mostly in moist soil and planking is followed. This method is successful during proper temperature regimes of October and November in case of medium to heavy loam soils. In this video, we have further argued that in case of clayey and salt affected soils broadcasting of raya/canola seed in standing water (Gap Chhat) is better option. Choka methos is better in case of small scale  lanting at domestic level. Planter sowing along the both edges of 2.5 feet beds is suggested in heavy loam soils and small seed drill method for light soils.
In this short video clip, two major and widely used methods of canola cultivation have been mentioned. Raya/canola crop is commonly planted through broadcast method mostly in moist soil and under special circumstances through broadcast method in the standing water. 7-8 different features of conventional versus Gap Chhat methods have been analysed and feasibility of each has been argued in this video.
AARI canola is a relatively short stature, heat tolerant, early maturing variety of raya group but very low in harmful acid having 12 % quantity of omega 3 contents which is double than most other varieties. Under the scenario of changing recent monsoon it has become very suitable to plant it in early September. Its yield potential is plus 20 maunds but mostly harvested under 20 maunds per acre which is considered as 30-40% lesser than more professional varieties like super canola, super raya and most hybrid varieties. Unlike most other varieties having variably black seeds, its seed is yellowish orange with minor mixture of black seeds due to which sometimes its market demand becomes lesser. After planting in September, it matures within 120 days and is easily harvested in early February. After this crop, spring maize, sunflower, early cotton crop, vegetables, sugarcane and fodders may easily be planted well in time. Most long durational and high statured canola/raya varieties damage sugarcane crop in winter season but in this video, we have advocated AARI canola as the best option as an intercrop in September planted sugarcane.
In this video, we ha highlighted proper planting time of canola and raya varieties in the central Punjab and areas alike this region. Most Raya varieties are considered as heat tolerant and suggested to be planted within the month of September when upper limits of temperature remain within 32-35 centigrade . Whereas, Most canola varieties except AARI canola which actually belongs to rapeseeds or raya group, are considered as temperature sensitive and suggested to be planted during the 1 st fortnight of October when upper limits of temperature are maintained for a week or so at 30-32 centigrade.
Super canola is considered as the best locally prepared canola variety having yield potential of plus 30 maunds per acre. Being rich in erucic acid free oil contents  of 41-43%, it is the most demanded variety in the market. It has large size and branched plants containing numerous  pods of intermediate size. Inspite of tall stature, it resists lodging in heavy loam soils. At maturity, its shattering behavior may sometimes reduce its yield very drastically. That is why, it is strongly suggested to harvest this variety at 75% maturity stage.
