We tear down a 8BA style flathead ford engine and show you where to look for the common cracks and problems. This engine was decent engine that we had to tear down for a customer that just wanted the block. We pulled the crank and pistons but the valves were stuck so we decided to leave them for his machine shop as they were not needed by either of us.

The crank in a mercury engine is .25" longer in the stroke, other than that there are no differences between a Mercury and a Ford engine block.

We did a visual inspection of the block after removing the heads to check the valve areas where they are usually cracked. Also the oil pan rails on both sides of the lower block are prone to cracking as well because the sidewalls are thin there and most people didn't run antifreeze back in the day.
