Online payment platform Alipay has launched augmented reality (AR) red envelops for Chinese people to celebrate the Spring Festival.
Red envelopes are known as Hongbao in Chinese and are traditionally filled with money and given to children from their parents and grandparents at the Chinese New Year. Nowadays the custom has largely been replaced with online equivalents using Alipay and WeChat pay, new technology to carry this tradition and custom.
AR red envelop is a new feature of Alipay, but it has nothing to do with paying users' water bill or topping up their cellphone account. It is an augmented reality game allowing users to hunt and snatch red envelopes. It uses technology similar to the smash-hit game "Pokemon Go" to blend the real and virtual worlds.
"Users can tap on the screen for a clue. The envelopes are usually hidden within an object. The APP uses location-based services and you can only plant envelopes within 500 kilometers of where you are standing," said Ling Hong, product manager of AR red envelope for Alipay.
The AR technology demonstrated in this APP first used the users' location through an advanced GPS system to show users the red envelopes closest to them.
It then used the camera from users' phone to identify the object they are looking at.
To release the red envelopes, users just need to scan the object with their phones and click on the money bags.
"Giving red envelopes is a traditional custom in China. We hope this fun new activity can bring everyone together during Chinese New Year. We also hope this will allow more online-offline interaction of people in this digital world. And this APP can be used by retailers to attract more traffic to their stores during the holidays," said Ling.
