A spokesman for Alistair Darling's family said that the former chancellor and seasoned member of the Labour Party died at the age of 70 from cancer.

Following the rescue of the UK's banking industry from the 2008 financial crisis by a political titan, Sir Keir Starmer of Labour led tributes to the guy.

Following the unionist side's triumphant 2014 campaign to keep Scotland a part of the United Kingdom, Sir Keir expressed his sorrow over the "immeasurable loss" of the legendary Labour politician.

Former Labor Party prime minister Gordon Brown paid tribute to his former colleague, describing him as "a statesman of unimpeachable integrity," and recalled how he had depended on the "wisdom and calmness" of his former ally.

Sir Tony Blair hailed Mr. Darling as a "outstanding" politician and called him the "safest of safe hands" in his administration. After his death, Blair stated that he would "remember him with huge affection".Rishi Sunak paid tribute to an honorary citizen who supported "this nation through challenging times". "The part he played in preserving our union's unity during the 2014 independence referendum was critical," he said.

The family released a statement on Thursday afternoon, saying, "The much-loved husband of Margaret and beloved father of Calum and Anna, died after a short spell in Western General Hospital under the wonderful care of the cancer team."

Sir Keir was "deeply saddened" at his death. The Labour leader described Mr. Darling as "the chancellor whose calm expertise and honesty helped to guide Britain through the tumult of the global financial crisis."Sir Keir said he considered himself "incredibly fortunate" to have benefited from the veteran's guidance over the years. "With his signature wry, good humor, he was always available to offer advice based on his decades of experience.""All those whose lives he touched will miss Alistair," he said. He will never fully recover from his death, nor will the Labour Party or his loved ones.

Under Prime Minister Brown's direction, Mr. Darling served as chancellor of the Labour administration from 2007 to 2010.

He was in charge of the Treasury at the height of the 2008 financial crisis and played a key role in passing a large bank rescue program that eventually helped to stabilize the British economy.

In a late-night meeting with bank executives following the sub-prime mortgage crisis, Mr. Darling arranged a £137 billion bailout for the UK financial sector. He had received a call from the RBS CEO, who informed him that the bank would fail within a few hours. The Better Together campaign, spearheaded by the Labour grandee, was successful in persuading Scots to stay in the UK instead of declaring independence in 2014. The winning difference was 55% to 45%.

Mr. Darling faced strong competition from Alex Salmond's SNP and the larger "Yes" movement, which gained enormous traction throughout the campaign. But in a pivotal pre-election TV debate, the senior Labour MP seemed to overcome Mr. Salmond, forcing the nationalist leader to define the currency that an independent Scotland would use.

Mr. Darling's death was announced, and Mr. Brown conveyed his "deeply saddened" thoughts. The former prime minister described the ally as "defined by a strong sense of social justice and who gained a global reputation for the assured competence."

According to the former Labour leader, Mr. Darling was a "popular and effective minister" who was highly appreciated by everyone who worked with him throughout the 2008 and 2009 banks bailouts and international economic agreements.
