セルフ給油機の仕組み/How a Fueling Nozzle Works

DENJIRO: I have a teapot here. If I tilt it… tea comes out. Let me pour another cup. Now there’s coffee coming out of it. Strange, no? Let me explain what happened with this model here. There are two chambers inside the teapot. Each chamber has an opening to draw air in. When I poured the coffee, I left the opening in the coffee chamber open and plugged the opening in the tea chamber. When I poured tea, I did the opposite and plugged the coffee chamber hole. I was switching between the holes that take in air.
The fueling nozzles at a gas station use a similar mechanism to automatically stop fueling. When the gas tank gets full, the nozzle automatically stops dispensing. It’s not that the nozzle is using electricity to detect that the tank is full. I have here a fueling nozzle. The hose is attached to a faucet. Let’s imagine that this tank is a car’s fuel tank and fill it up with water.
BOY: It stopped!
DENJIRO: I’m still pulling on the lever, but the water stopped automatically. The key is the opening at the tip of the nozzle. When this hole gets blocked, the water stops. I have here a model to show you what’s going on inside. There’s a tube attached to the hole at the tip, and it’s connected to the center part of the nozzle. When I pull the lever, the gas flows in the direction shown. When the tank gets filled with gas and the hole at the tip gets blocked, the spring at the lever springs into action and blocks the gas. It’s actually pretty simple how the nozzle prevents the tank from overflowing.
