Not everyone knows that saffron comes from a very beautiful and interesting Crocus. Commonly referred to as red gold as it’s so precious, saffron is said to be the most expensive spice available by weight. Easily grown at home the flowers provide interesting and distinctive autumnal colour and if harvested, saffron strands. Each goblet shaped bloom is vividly marked and blushed in royal-purple and mauve from late September to November. They prefer full sun, in free draining soil and look great when planted in large clumps. Each bulb can produce up to four flowers with red golden stigmas of saffron. Best planted in August / September in free draining soil. Height and spread 15cm.
