Japan increased the pressure on
Japan increased the pressure on Pool B rivals South Africa and Scotland, who also meet on Saturday, with a controlled performance against Samoa in Milton Keynes. They ran out 26-5 winners but may rue being too conservative in the second half and missing out on a possible bonus point.

Samoa scored a late try through Paul Perez but, as they were trailing 23-0 at the time, the match will be remembered more for their indiscipline, which resulted in three players - Faifili Levave, Sakaria Taulafo and Teofilo Paulo - being sent to the sin bin and the concession of a penalty try.
Japan saw an early try by full-back Ayumu Goromaru ruled out for a marginal forward pass but they controlled the first half and scored 20 points without reply, one a penalty try for collapsing the front row and the second a wonderful solo effort from wing Akihito Yamada (pictured above), who wriggled out of Alesana Tuilagi's grasp to score in the corner.
Yamada left the pitch on a stretcher after 16 minutes of the second half after hurting himself while making a tackle. By that time, belatedly, Samoa were beginning to show some serious attacking intent and they finally made it onto the scoreboard after a thrilling series of attacks which carried them the length of the field, Tim Nanai-Williams sending Perez over.
But any hopes of a Samoa comeback were swiftly doused by two penalties from Japan's full-back, and record points scorer, Ayumu Goromaru. He ended the match with 16 points and the man of the match award.
