What we tend to know
What we tend to know as bean to cup coffee machines in the UK, and are usually referred to as "Fully automatic" coffee machines outside of the UK, are machines that have a built in grinder, and also a built in brewing unit (sometimes referred to as the infuser) so everything is done internally.
The brewing unit receives the ground coffee internally from the built in grinder, tamps the coffee, the hot water is pumped in, the shot is pulled, and the puck of coffee is ejected internally into the grounds container.
So an Automatic or bean to cup, is literally a "bean to cup" machine. Beans in the top, press a button, get your espresso, thanks to the brewing unit.
The Barista Express that I'm showing here, is a portafilter (meaning filter holder) espresso machine with an integrated grinder, it's not an automatic / bean to cup coffee machine - it doesn't have a brewing unit.
So just as you would do with any other traditional espresso machine, you have to grind the coffee into the portafilter, tamp, lock the portafilter into the group, press the shot button, then knock out the used puck of coffee into the knock box.
The benefit of bean to cup or fully automatic coffee machines is convenience, you just press the button, and it's literally bean to cup, hence the name.
The benefit of portafilter espresso machines, though, is that they produce "true" portafilter espresso, which is (generally speaking) more intense in both taste and body.
So just keep in mind if that you buy a machine like the Barista Express, or similar, and you buy it thinking that it's a bean to cup machine, you just press a button, this isn't quite the case.
There are machines now that close the gap between these two different schools of machines, the Sage/Breville Barista Touch Impress and Express Impress for example assist the user to produce more like bean to cup machine convenience with home barista espresso quality, as do the Oracle and Oracle Touch.
