Potassium metal is added to water 6 different times.  Phenolphthalein has been added to show the presence of hydroxide after the reaction.  Alkali metals react with water to produce hydrogen gas rather violently since the valence electron on an atom of an alkali metal is very loosely held in place and many chemicals are capable of removing that electron.
2K + 2H2O yields 2KOH + H2
Potassium is more reactive than sodium or lithium because of the additional energy levels K will release its valence electron even easier since there is a weaker net attractive force.  Sodium is less reactive, but this can allow the build up of larger volumes of hydrogen gas before ignition so sometimes sodium is even more explosive.
