The survival rate for box jellyfish sting victims may be boosted by methods found in a new study. Box jellyfish stings are lethal and can kill within five minutes. Sting victims have traditionally been given CPR to revive their hearts, but CPR administration would stop after about 20 minutes if the patient does not recover. A new study found that jellyfish venom contains two components. The first kills 70 per cent of human heart cells and stops the heart; the second component then destroys the heart entirely. However, if the victim's heart and lung functions continue to be supported, the venom wears off after six to seven hours and make a full recovery. The finding could change the way people are treated for the stings, and increase survival rate drastically.
