VIKTOR ORBAN: Sensation! EU Commission boycotts meeting - now there is a suspicion

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has reacted to the unilateral actions of Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Ukraine policy with a boycott decision. The top German politician announced that no commissioners, but only high-ranking officials, will attend future informal ministerial meetings under the leadership of the current EU Council Presidency in Hungary. In addition, the EU Commission is foregoing the traditional inaugural visit to the Hungarian Presidency, a spokesperson announced. There was initially an indignant reaction from Budapest from the Minister for European Union Affairs, Janos Boka.

Orban’s “peace mission”

The background to von der Leyen's decision is a foreign trip by Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban, which was not coordinated with the EU, a few days after the start of the Hungarian EU Council Presidency. Orban met Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin in Moscow and staged this as a "peace mission" to resolve the Ukraine conflict. He later traveled to Beijing for talks with China's head of state and party leader Xi Jinping and to the USA for a meeting with former US President Donald Trump.

The trips met with great resentment in the EU - especially because the Kremlin was able to exploit the Moscow visit for its propaganda and Orban did not clearly represent the EU position on Ukraine policy during the trip.

The European Commission has made it clear several times that Orban is not travelling on behalf of the international community. The Foreign Office has also voiced clear criticism. "These are Hungarian solo actions that we observe with great surprise and scepticism," said a spokesman at the Federal Press Conference in Berlin last Friday. Orban speaks exclusively for himself on these trips - and not for the European Union. Regarding possible consequences, the spokesman said that we will have to wait and see how the Hungarian Council Presidency continues. "It has already caused great damage."

Some countries have already taken action

In response to Orban's unilateral actions at the start of the EU Council Presidency, Lithuania and Sweden announced that they would temporarily not send ministers to meetings in Hungary. The Hungarian approach is harmful and must have consequences, said Sweden's current EU minister and designated EU Commissioner Jessika Roswall. According to Roswall, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland intend to react similarly to the Hungarian approach.

There is also currently a discussion in Brussels about whether an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers, originally planned for the end of August in Budapest, should not be moved to Brussels. A decision could be made by EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell at the last regular meeting of EU foreign ministers before the summer break next Monday. He chairs the EU foreign ministers' meetings and is also responsible for sending invitations to them.

Decision comes shortly before vote in the EU Parliament

The EU Commission's decision comes a few days before the vote on a second term for Ursula von der Leyen in the European Parliament. European party families such as the Social Democrats, Greens and Liberals have repeatedly called on her in the past to take a tougher stance towards Hungary. Von der Leyen is dependent on the votes from this camp in the election on Thursday.

Green MEP Daniel Freund said: "Orban's actions are not only a clear violation of the EU treaties, but they weaken the EU at a time of enormous foreign policy instability." Von der Leyen is doing the right thing. "Parliament should now follow this example. That means: no invitation for Viktor Orban to the European Parliament."
