Gloucestershire Railway Station is my home station, and thousands of commuters pass through it every year without a thought of the rich history of the place. The Birmingham and Gloucester Railway were the first to lay rails through here in 1840, quickly followed by the Great Western Railway in 1844. They were both using their company’s rail grade which meant that there were both broad-gauge and standard-gauge side by side so that goods and passengers had to be transferred from one to the other to continue their journeys beyond Gloucester. There were cartoons to highlight the ciaos which ensued and which took the companies 28 years to sort out. Remarkably the platform over which the transfers took place still exists.
At a third of a mile long, the platform was once one of the longest in the country and a lot of intricate rail crossovers were required to make use of it. At the time there were two stations here because the Midland Railway which the Birmingham and Gloucester Railway had become, and the GWR couldn’t agree on sharing one.
Meanwhile the GWR had built an extension to South Wales, and it is the approach to the station that is the star of the film. Beautifully constructed and a work of immense skill and ingenuity, it is a wonder to behold. Next time you are in Gloucester with time on your hands, maybe between connections, have a look around.
