The Australian's Associate Editor Jamie Walker says he believes a World War II sailor whose remains were identified after 80 years will be remembered as a hero.

The sailor, Thomas Welsby Clark, was a 21-year-old from Brisbane.

"I think he will be remembered as everyone who gave their lives in  World War II were remembered - as heroes, as the young men and women who saved this nation," Mr Walker told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

"He really had the world at his feet, he was an accountant, he came from a very good family, he'd just in fact got engaged just before he joined the (HMAS) Sydney.

"And I think it's, sort of, one of these tragedies which we have no way to understand today because we simply don't have that experience."
