ERDOGAN [HISTORIC SPEECH] "THE WORLD IS BIGGER THAN FIVE" WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES.

President of Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s speech at the United Nations and his observation that “The world is bigger than five” had great repercussions on the global press and opinion. But this is not a new development. As the leader of a country that extends a hand to the people in need due to wars and economic hardships, makes international attempts at solving global problems, and is directly influenced by the course of its neighboring countries, he pointed to this observation in the past as well. But let’s use this opportunity to remember how Turkey isn’t satisfied with only talking about these situations.

Whether it’s accepting refugees or sending aid to many regions in the world, Turkey is the world’s third ranking country following the U.S. and the U.K. in sending humanitarian aid to many regions in the world. However, based on national income, Turkey is the most generous country in terms of humanitarian aid. Rushing to help during the natural disasters in Nepal, Chile, and the Philippines as well as the Ebola outbreak in Africa, Turkey allowed 2,700,000 Syrian refugees into its borders; the country has made – and still continues to make – investments and regulations to meet the refugees’ needs from education to jobs.

About 10 years ago, President Erdoğan started an initiation a project known as the Alliance of Civilizations with then Prime Minister of Spain, which aimed to get rid of the mutual doubt and risk of polarization between Muslim countries and Western societies. This project was endorsed by the United Nations Secretary General and evolved into an initiation by the United Nations.

Last May, Turkey hosted the 1st World Humanitarian Summit. Discussing the problems of humanitarian aid system and offering solutions, the summit was attended by 55 presidents and prime ministers. During the closing ceremony of the event, President Erdoğan emphasized the injustice in the world.

In his speech, President Erdoğan reminded that the West acted slow against the refugee problem: “We have spent nearly $25 billion in total so far. The support the UN has provided us is $525 million. Unfortunately, the EU has not been able to keep its promises.” He followed by pointing at the attitude of European countries against refugees: “Refugees face degrading treatment in European cities. I address to all international community and all European friends who perceive Syrian refugees as a vital threat to themselves. It is a futile effort to look for peace behind the barbed wire fences. If we cannot find a solution for the education, employment and housing problems of Syrian refugees quickly, we cannot prevent the irregular migration, and security risks.”

President Erdoğan also pointed at the problems in Iraq and Palestine that have been existing for years and for which enough effort hasn’t been delivered: “People in many countries of the world struggle with hunger, epidemics, poverty, and illiteracy. This is a disgraceful picture injuring human dignity and disturbing human conscience. Peace, prosperity and security of future generations depend on the steps and precautions we take today. This is the time of showing leadership with a consciousness of our responsibilities and addressing the problems decisively.”

President Erdoğan also evaluated the structure of the United Nations Security Council by saying, “Unless the Security Council, which is the main organ responsible for establishment of international peace and security, is reformed, these efforts will not reach their purpose completely. For his reason, I remind the reality that ‘the world is bigger than five’ to the international public opinion on every occasion. You cannot have the world abide by the words spoken by these five countries. A United Nations Security Council which fails to represent the whole world cannot deliver justice.” He ended his speech by expressing his hope that the 71st Grand Assembly will be a beginning to resolve the world’s problems.
