Crown lengthening is a procedure
Crown lengthening is a procedure that involves reshaping the gums at the base of a tooth in order to expose more of the tooth’s surface. This treatment is necessary when a tooth has broken near the gum line and a minimum amount of tooth is required to mount a replacement crown. A gummy smile, or where the gums cover more of the teeth’s surfaces than usual, can also be treated with crown lengthening to achieve a more aesthetic gum-to-tooth ratio.
During the procedure, your surgeon will create a gingival flap, remove a small amount of bone along the ridge, and suture the gums back into place to heal. You will see the results of crown lengthening immediately. After undergoing a crown lengthening procedure, restorative dental crowns will fit properly and you will feel more confident about the aesthetics of your smile.
