In today’s tip I briefly explain why an open differential behaves the way it does when a vehicle is stuck. It’s a common misconception that when an open differential vehicle loses traction all the power from the engine is sent to the wheel that is slipping.

The power that’s sent to each wheel via the differential is actually ideally a 50/50 split. The problem is, with an open diff, the wheel without traction decides the torque for the other wheel. Since it doesn’t take much to spin a wheel that’s slipping, the one that would actually have traction doesn’t receive enough power to actually do anything with it. This maintains that 50/50 balance. These problems created by the open differential are offset by the pros of a cheaper cost and more fuel efficiency on road.

For more resources on differentials I recommend that you take a look at Engineering Explained’s Youtube videos on the subject. He’s able to go into much more detail than I can. :)
