Krakow is one of the oldest and largest cities in Poland, and the second largest city in the country after the capital Warsaw.
Wawel Royal Castle is a defensive and residential building, one of the most important and valuable architectural monuments in Poland, and also a pearl of Renaissance architecture north of the Alps. Based on archaeological works, we can say that the first forms of monumental and defensive construction existed in Wawel at the beginning of the 11th century. The expansion of Wawel facilities and the construction of new ones began in the early 11th and 12th centuries, when Kraków became the capital of Poland at the expense of Gniezno.
