Special thanks to Francisco Hernandez for letting me crash in Texas while we tested a bunch of gear on his shoots! @fjhphoto

Thanks Ulysses Ashton for the battling speedlights!

Note about audio change during recycle time discussion In previous videos, I've mentioned that the Godox V1 was listed as 650 full power recycles. With 0 explanation, the production model has since been updated to 480, despite it having the same battery and same peak output. I have no idea what happened, but I also never confirmed 650 through a test either. I will eventually suck it up (this is the most annoying test to run for me) and test to see if there's any discrepancies and post the results on my community tab...some day.

A few minor points I didn't make. The Profoto does not have reverse tilt and the Godox does. This is a very nice feature for event photographers.
The Profoto Air Remote does not report back power adjustments. You can only modify the light by adding or decreasing the numerical value, but you have no idea what power setting you're at.
The Profoto A1 does not have models outside of Sony and Canon. Yes, if you have the correct air remote (like Sony or Fuji) it's fully featured off camera, but you won't get ttl / hss on camera. I'm shocked it's taken them this long and we still don't know when models for those brands came out.

There has been a ton of discussion recently regarding Godox's controversial development of the Godox V1 (aka Flashpoint R2 Zoom Li-on X). It all started when Profoto released a statement that Godox had "stole" patent pending designs of the Profoto A1. https://petapixel.com/2019/03/14/prof...
Later, we learned that Profoto never contacted Godox, and instead went straight to Godox distributors with the issue.

It doesn't seem that there have been any legitimate legal consequences as Godox is indeed going forward with the release of their Godox V1 flash worldwide. I'll let the companies and legal experts handle that aspect. As I've done before, I wanted to dig in to the two products and find out which one is better performing for photographers. I took a look at the light quality, light output, color consistency, flash durations, recycle speed, and build quality.
I did not address features in this video because they are very similar, both do have HSS, TTL, and wireless control of output and features via their proprietary remotes
Profoto Air Remote / Profoto Connect
Godox XPro, X1-T, X2-T, XT32, and R2 Pro II as well as TT350, V350, TT600, TT685, V860II, V850II speedlights.
Overall, I find that the Godox V1 matches or betters the Profoto A1 in terms of HSS, TTL, Light output, Zoom range,  Light pattern, T.1 flash durations, and recycle time.
The Profoto A1 has a superior (closer to daylight) color temperature, can sustain high output shooting for longer, and has a more sleek design.
With that and the price of the Godox V1 being 1/4th the price of the Profoto A1, I have to recommend the Godox A1 as the better choice. I do understand if people choose to purchase the A1 to control their existing Profoto lights such as the B1X, B2, B1, and B10. But as a first time purchaser the Profoto is not worth the additional investment.
One may cite build quality and brand support for Profoto products being reasons to justify the additional investment in their products. First, there is support for Godox as long as you choose a respected retailer, which is why I suggest people in the U.S. purchase from Adorama. As far as build quality goes, I am now on my 4th year with Godox products and outside of damage I cause (letting light stands drop), all of my lights are still performing as expected. It's impossible to know how long-lasting these products truly are but with the pace of technology advancing so fast I'm not sure paying for lights to last decades is even a smart business decision these days.
