First things first, it's perfectly OKAY not to be a Full-Time Artist. In many ways, it's smarter to have a DAY job, ensuring stable income while pursuing your passion on the side. This approach is stress-free, beneficial for you or your family, and there's absolutely NO shame in it. I've experienced both worlds, being full-time for 13 years, with its ups and downs. The least enjoyable part? Chasing down payments. But, if you can secure and maintain such work, it's rewarding.

So, what does it truly take to be a full-time artist? It's not about your STYLE or skill level. With diverse tastes, there's an audience for every style. Here's the real deal:

#1 FOCUS and DISCIPLINE. Treat your art like a job, showing up EVERY DAMN DAY. You're your own boss, so hold yourself accountable. Maybe even mock fire yourself occasionally?

#2 REALISTIC NEEDS. Identify your essential expenses: rent, bills, food, and basic art supplies. Don't get caught up in luxury items. Once you've calculated your basic needs, double that figure to determine your "QUIT YOUR DAY JOB" number. Aim to sustain this income for 5-6 months before making any drastic changes.

#3 SPECIALIZATION. While versatility is great, focus is key. Early on, choose a specific path that resonates with you and excel in it. This focus will be more rewarding than spreading yourself too thin.

#4 VISIBILITY. Your talent won't matter if no one knows you exist. Embrace your authentic self and share your story, resonating with others who've had similar experiences. Or, continue drawing Ninja Turtles and pin-ups, but know there's more out there.

#4.5 YOUR STORY. What's your elevator pitch? Understanding and articulating your identity and mission are crucial for self-awareness and networking.

#5 EMBRACE FAILURE. View every setback as a learning opportunity. Reflect on experiences, like my short-lived MAGIC BOX STUDIOS venture, to understand what you truly want and how to pivot effectively.

#6 KNOW WHEN TO PIVOT. Persistence is key, but so is flexibility. If you're hitting a wall, a slight change in approach could unlock new opportunities.

#7 LEARN TO MARKET. Artists often struggle with self-promotion, but it's essential. Practice asking and positioning your requests in engaging ways.

#8 MAINTAIN POSITIVITY. Surround yourself with uplifting individuals and celebrate the successes of fellow artists. Their victories are collective wins for the community.

#9 OBSERVE AND LEARN. Analyze successful artists not to copy but to be inspired and find your own path.

#10 GIVE BACK. If you've achieved success, help others. Kindness and mentorship can have profound impacts.

#11 SELF-REFLECTION. If you've tried everything without success, critically assess your efforts and strategies. Remember, it's okay to pursue art as a hobby or side project.

Whether you're aiming for full-time artistry or enjoying it as a pastime, the key is not to lose your passion. Keep pushing, learning, and evolving. Join our community, access over 100 weeks of free articles, and find support among fellow artists.
