It was only three months
It was only three months ago that Abby Stein, formally a prominent Hasidic man from Brooklyn, started hormone therapy to fully transition into a transgender woman.
Sitting in a friend's apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, she joked, "I am going to be the first woman ultra orthodox Jewish rabbi," as she learned to apply her makeup. Stein explained that she left Hasidism four years ago mainly for intellectually reasons, "because I didn't believe in the beliefs of the community," but she also believes her gender dysphoria has something to do with disengaging.
Stein's exit from the ultra-Orthodox Hasidic community has not been welcomed by everyone. "When I left I basically lost all of my friends and my community." Now, her only contact "is through hate emails." All of this however, is not stopping her from embracing her new life, friends, and maybe soon dating. Stein's goal is to raise transgender awareness in the ultra-Orthodox community.
