FIRST, to be maximally effective, I feel that you need to be able to "put yourself in the patient's shoes" to the fullest extent that you are able.
THEN, you must have done your homework and have the experience to know what is available that might be able to meet their needs.
FINALLY, you must think "outside the box" and ask yourself if there might be a better way to solve this patient's particular problem(s). And, in some cases, this means getting creative with financing some of the more expensive low vision glasses, low vision devices, and low vision aids for those who are unable to afford them.
