For the rest of your life, you're probably going to remember where you were when you got accepted to medical school. I remember for me, I was at work. My mom called me crying on the phone and read me the letter from New York Medical College.

But after all the work and waiting to finally get that acceptance, people often ask, "How can I prepare for medical school now?" Here are 6 things to do after getting that acceptance:

1. Make sure you're reading EVERYTHING sent to you from your medical school. DON'T miss any required follow-up letters or anything like that. It IS possible that you accidentally give up your space in that medical school class if you miss something like this.

2. You'll have to start getting your loans ready with FAFSA or whatever you're doing personally. If you have bad credit, try to fix it as quickly as possible, so you can be sure to get your loans.

3. Understand that your acceptance to med school is conditional upon you meeting all the requirements of matriculation at that school. If they require a specific class that you haven't taken yet, be sure to have it done before you're starting. If you get into trouble with an arrest or something, report that to the school—don't try to hide anything. If you're open and honest, you will likely not lose your place in the class.

4. If you're in a Master's program or other program when you got accepted, you usually don't HAVE to finish that program. You can ask the medical school that accepted you if they are okay with you quitting the program you're currently in.

5. Can you "pre-study" or do something else to "prepare for medical school," academically? Not really. Some people think they'll prepare by learning Latin or taking anatomy. But there is no way to seriously prepare for the fire hose that is med school. Instead, you should relax. Enjoy time with family and your hobbies. You could read or listen to podcasts about what med school is like, what to expect—but don't expect to seriously pre-study the material in a way that will prepare you.

6. Allow yourself to enjoy the fact that you're going to become a physician. Getting into medical school is one of the major hurdles on this path. Yes, you have a lot more work ahead—but you've really achieved something by getting to this med school acceptance, so take a moment to appreciate that, enjoy that, and celebrate it!
