About this video: So you want to hook your MacBook up to a TV or another monitor, but you don't know how to it. It doesn't have any of the traditional ports you are used to, and everywhere you look is giving you a different answer because MacBooks have changed so much over time. Well, luckily, this video will answer any and all questions you have.

First off though, we need to look at what you are plugging your MacBook in to see what kind of cable we need to go into the TV or Monitor. Most likely this is going to be one of three cables - an HDMI, a DVI, or a DisplayPort. Here is what the connections look like on the back of a monitor, so you know what each is. It doesn't really matter which one you are using, we just need to make a note of it for when we go to get our cable later.

Now let's move over to your Macbook. Depending on what generation of MacBook you have, the cable you will use will be different. How do you find out what MacBook you have? Well, it's pretty simple. On your desktop click on the Apple logo in the top right. You will then see 'About This Mac'. Here it will have what generation your MacBook is Early 2015, late 2017, mid-2013, etc. etc. Once you've got this, you will know what cable to us.

For MacBooks from late-2008 to mid-2011, you will need a mini DisplayPort to HDMI, DVI, or Display Port cable depending on what port you have on your TV or Monitor. To double check this, here is what a mini-DisplayPort looks like on a Macbook. A note here though, this will look exactly like a Thunderbolt port which moves us on to the next generation of MacBooks.

Any MacBooks from late-2011 to mid-2016 can use a Thunderbolt 1 connection for external displays. This means you will need a Thunderbolt to HDMI, DVI, or DisplayPort again depending on what your TV has. Make sure you are getting a Thunderbolt 1 connector though unless you have a late-2013 or newer MacBook. While Thunderbolt 1 will work with these MacBooks they also work with the faster Thunderbolt 2 ports.

Starting with late 2016 MacBooks though, Apple started getting rid of ports moving to just one USB C connection for charging, displays, etc. Thus, if you have a late-2016 or newer MacBook, you will nee a USB-C to HDMI, DisplayPort, or DVI to connect your MacBook to a second monitor. I would also recommend getting a USB-C expansion dongle as you will not be able to use an external display and charge your MacBook without one.
