In this video Allen Newberry J.S. discusses which size of either fine or sterling silver wire he prefers for silver wire inlay in wood.  Allen also discusses why you might want to use the two main sizes of wire for inlaying.  He also shows a few clips from his Silver Wire Inlay class at the Eureka Springs School of the Arts.  Special thanks to Shawn Stropshire for the photos of student work and student tool sets.

Here are the two main wire types:

.008” x .055” half hard
Great for keeping smooth curves and straight lines.  Works well on flat surfaces.  Is difficult to use on curved surfaces.

.013” x .055” dead soft
Works a lot easier than the other wire on curved surfaces.  But, needs a little nudging to keep the lines straight and the curves smooth.

You can use either fine silver or sterling silver.
