Spa Valley Railway - Summer Diesel Gala 2021

Following a 2 year hiatus,
Following a 2 year hiatus, the Spa Valley Railway's 'Summer Diesel Gala' made a welcome return to the calendar. Held over the 6th - 8th August, the event would feature an intensive timetable, with evening trains on the Friday and Saturday, as well as the traditional 'Multi-Header' and 'Load-Ex' trips on the Sunday.
The event would include a solitary guest loco, in the shape of Class 33 No. 33002 'Sea King', which arrived from the South Devon Railway. The 'Crompton' will remain on the Spa Valley Railway for the next few months, courtesy of the South Devon Diesel Traction Group. Built in February 1960, 33002 is also the oldest surviving Class 33!
Meanwhile, the event would mark the final appearance of Class 20 No. D8188 on the Spa Valley Railway. The loco had arrived in the High Wealds in March 2020, ahead of the planned 'Spring Diesel Weekend', however this was cancelled due to the Pandemic, and the 'Chopper' would remain on the Railway for an extended period. D8188 would move to the Mid Hants Railway a few days after the 'Summer Diesel Gala' of 2021, where it would reunite with classmate No. D8059. Both English Electric Type 1s are owned by the Somerset & Dorset Locomotive Company.
The resident fleet of operational diesels would complete the line-up - Class 31 No. 31430 'Sister Dora', Class 33 No. 33063 'R.J. Mitchell', Class 73 No. 73140 and Class 207 'Thumper' DEMU No. 1317. In addition, Class 421 '3-CIG' No. 1497 'Freshwater' would be utilised as coaching stock.
There was also a cameo appearance from Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0 Tender Conversion No. 2890 'Douglas', which took charge of a handful of services on the Sunday.
