This film is presented to you by Lutèce Créations, the European specialist in music boxes and automatons. Our company offers, through its Parisian shop and its websites, various old (from the end of the 19th century until the First World War) and vintage (50s to the 70s) automatons.
This documentary, "L'âme au corps" (the soul to the body) presents the rich collection of the museum of automata in Neuilly sur Seine in the suburbs of Paris.
In 1978, the city of Neuilly sur Seine acquired the Jacques Damiot's collection of automatons (63 mechanical automatons). The collection has since been completed by 6 automatons bought in public sale between 1993 and 1996.
The automatons (or automata) exhibited in the museum of Neuilly sur Seine give an overview of the French manufacture of mechanical automatons from 1850 until 1930 (the automata makers were Vichy, Théroude, Lambert, Phalibois, Roullet-Decamps, Renou etc ...).
The museum is in the Arturo Lopez hotel, also known as the Rodocanachi hotel. This hotel was built in 1903 by the architect Paul Rodocanachi with the participation of the architect Danneron, on the plan of an 18th century hotel. Arturo Lopez bought it in 1928 to collect furniture from royal residences. He carried out transformations and extensions of the hotel in 1950-1958. The building was acquired in 1971 by the municipality, to transform it into a museum and cultural center. The building is of interest from the point of view of its decorations (woodwork, marble, mirrors, etc.) and the ballroom entirely covered with shells and coral like the grotto of Rambouillet.
The museum of automatons is currently closed. The collection of automatons is visible during occasional temporary exhibitions.
The story of the documentary: A child, accustomed to electronic and futuristic toys without soul, discovers, while passing in front of the gate of a Museum, the existence of an exhibition of old automatons. He enters, meets an authoritarian guardian and lets himself be locked up in the establishment.
Hidden behind a mannequin, the teenager comes out of his hiding place and tries to start one of the automatons. Suddenly, all this little world comes to life, freed from the influence of its jailer. A colorful light and sound show!
The automaton lion of the Roullet-Decamps firm starts to nod while sticking out its fangs, a ballerina in a feathered costume starts to waltz, the Little Tich clown curtsies defying the laws of gravity. And, suddenly, the enchantress android appears.
She gives life to an automaton clown named Victor. This curious character invites the child to travel in an unusual world: the world of automatons (or automata) where androids and artificial animals behave like living beings.
In a sort of dream, the child will discover scenes of everyday life: an automaton grandmother knitting near a fireplace under the gaze of an artificial cat emerging from a boot , a mechanical cow in a meadow grazing while bowing, a curious priest in his church lecturing his flock and preached by a musician angel coming out of one of the stained glass windows, an automaton clown in a circus playing with the rays of a quarter moon, neapolitan musicians playing the mandolin with a feather balanced on their nose, a snake charmer playing the trumpet in front of a snake coiled around her arm ...
All these singular scenes show that automatons, androids and artificial animals of the past centuries have a soul, a personality, a poetry very far from the cold futuristic robots.
