Towns covered in ash after the powerful eruption of the Shiveluch volcano Kamchatka, Russia

The Shiveluch Volcano, located on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, has recently experienced a powerful eruption that sent a massive cloud of ash high into the sky. The eruptive column rose up to 10 km above the summit and dispersed over 100 km, resulting in ashfall in nearby localities.

The eruption of Shiveluch is significant, as it poses an increased threat to air traffic in Russia's far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula.

On Tuesday, the Shiveluch volcano situated in Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula erupted, causing an ash cloud that rose to a height of 10 kilometers (six miles) in the air, thus presenting a greater threat to air traffic.

The Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) issued a code red Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation, indicating that ash explosions reaching a height of 15 kilometers (9.32 miles) could occur at any time.

The team noted that the ongoing activity could impact low-flying and international aircraft.

According to the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The ash cloud resulting from the eruption moved to the west and south, measuring 400 by 270 kilometers, and Russian media outlets suggested that it was continuing to spread.

Oleg Bondarenko, the head of the Ust-Kamchatsky municipal region, noted in a Telegram post that local authorities had shut down schools and ordered nearby village residents to remain indoors.

Kamchatka Peninsula, located in the north Pacific Ocean, is home to around 160 volcanoes, with only about two dozen of them being active.

UNESCO has classified the Volcanoes of Kamchatka as a World Heritage Site.

Shiveluch is one of Kamchatka's most active and massive volcanoes, having had approximately 60 significant eruptions over the past ten thousand years, with the most recent major eruption occurring in 2007.

The village of Klyuchi, as well as neighboring areas such as Maisky and Kozyrevsk, have been severely affected by the ashfall.

The residents in the affected areas have suffered greatly due to the extreme precipitation caused by the volcanic eruption.
