This is the Sonos Ace. Sonos’ First attempt at wireless Noise Canceling Headphones. They feel nice in the hand, the top of the headband and ear cups are plastic, but with vegan leather for the headband and ear pad cushions. The chrome finishes are metal and the Earpads themselves magnetically attached like how Apple AirPods Max do, for easy replacement. The nice thing is, Sonos made each ear cup a different color inside to make it easier to know which side is right or left. The Sonos Ace earcups swivel, but the hinges don’t bend. Some Noise Canceling headphones, like the Bose Quiet Comfort Ultra and these older Sony XM3s have bendable hinges that make them compact when stored. The Sonos Ace does take up a decent space in your bag when you take it with you. But the case it comes with is pretty slim, so it’s easy to find a good spot to pack it in your bag. It also has this little magnetic cable management pocket that fits all of the cables that came with it, and has this green interior that gives it a nice contrast that I like. The Sonos Ace has physical buttons on the ear cups that you can use to control the headphones. On the right it has a button to control noise canceling and a nice metal slider that you can slide up and down to control volume, and press to play, pause, and skip tracks. On the left ear cup you’ll find a usb-c port for charging and the power button.

The Sonos Ace sounds great, like no complaints here, I can hear so many minor details that I usually miss with these on. The Ace is really comfortable. I could wear them for hours without any discomfort or ear heat at room temperature. The Ace also has good noise canceling. The world kind of just disappears around you. The Ace also has an aware mode, this is the mode that allows the mics to pick up outside noise and simulate the sounds you get when you’re not wearing them. If you don’t like how the Sonos Ace sounds, you can adjust the EQ and settings for them within the Sonos app. However, the EQ is pretty barebones, and there’s not too many settings to adjust.

Sonos recently pushed out a software update that changed a lot of things about their app and users were not not happy. They did promise to add back in a lot of these missing features over time, but it still sucks to lose features and one of the main reasons they made these changes was to push out this app to support the Sonos Ace. Which is interesting, because even the standout feature that separates it from other noise canceling headphones is extremely neutered right now. Like TV Audio swap which will only work when connected to an iOS device, at least for now. You could get similar features with other brands with a few big caveats. If you own AirPods Max or really any airpods you can do similar things with an apple TV, only on the Apple TV though. And really If you have any recent smart TV or streaming box, between an Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, or Chomecast with Google TV. You can just connect any bluetooth headphones to them.

There’s a lot of these noise canceling headphones that range in price. But the Sonos Ace sits on the premium end along with the big 3. The Sony WH1000XM5, Bose QuietComfort Ultra and Apple Airpods Max. The Sonos Ace sits in the middle of all this. These aren’t that much more expensive than the Sony or Bose and you are getting what I think is a more complete package with some additional features. That being said, its standout feature is neat, but not a gamechanger considering how limited it currently is.
