Crossovers continue to roll off dealership lots at a remarkable pace, meaning Nissan’s best-selling car in 2017 may very well be the Nissan Rogue, and not the long-standing sales-king, the Altima. The formula for crossovers’ success seems simple enough: deliver practicality without sacrificing comfort or space. Now, however, Nissan is looking to further bolster the Rogue lineup with a hybrid. Does the 2017 Nissan Rogue Hybrid deliver the perfect package?

Well, to start, if price is paramount, the Rogue Hybrid may fall short. While the gas-powered Rogue is offered in a basic S trim, the Hybrid comes as only a mid-level SV or top-shelf SL trim. Both trims are well optioned, with a 5-inch touchscreen, heated front seats, dual-zone climate, and satellite radio all coming at no extra cost in the SV, and the SL upgrading the screen to 7 inches, while adding a 9-speaker Bose stereo, leather upholstery, and a heated steering wheel. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are sadly missing, although NissanConnect with Navigation is optional on the SV and standard on SL. Both trims can be optioned with a power panoramic moonroof.

The Rogue Hybrid also loses the optional 3rd row. That said, seating 7 in a traditional Rogue is extremely tight and leaves almost no cargo space. Plus, the real appeal of the hybrid is its fuel efficiency. A 2.0-liter gas engine making 141 horsepower and 144 lb-ft of torque pairs with a 30kW electric motor with 40 hp for net system horsepower of 176. Managed by Nissan’s XTronic continuously variable transmission (CVT), Front-wheel-drive (FWD) Rogue Hybrids should return 33 mpg city/ 35 highway/ 34 combined, while all-wheel-drive (AWD) versions should sit at 31/34/33.

The 2016 Rogue was a named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS, and that shouldn’t change for 2017. Advanced safety features available in the Rogue Hybrid include a backup camera, pedestrian detection, intelligent cruise control, lane-departure warning and prevention, and blind spot assist.
