Stephanie at Hightower Stitching shares Chicken Scratch embroidery, another hand stitching project that uses gingham fabric and embroidery thread on an apron, but which can be on a project with gingham fabric.  D. Below is correct for the white squares between the diamonds done with the 'pegs'.

Embroidery Pattern:
A.  Running stitch vertically in lighter pink squares. (Skip darker square.)
B.  Running stitch horizontally in lighter pink square. (Skip darker square.)
C.  Run a thread under the first 4 'pegs' to form a diamond, move down to next 4 pegs and repeat.
D.  In the white square:  Stars-stitch from one corner to the other, then stitch from the other corner to its opposite corner, then stitch in one side of the white square to the other side.  Finally, stitch from the top side of the white box to the opposite side.

Whichever way your 'D" stars turn out repeat in each white square, so they look alike.
