The governing body of Formula 1 racing, known as Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, recently disclosed a data breach affecting personal information after their email accounts were hacked via a phishing attack.

According to their public statement, FIA became aware that phishing attacks had led to unauthorized access of personal data contained within two email accounts. In this case, hackers successfully fooled employees into providing their email credentials.

Once gaining access, the hackers were then able to view and potentially extract any personal information that was inside the compromised inboxes and their attached files and folders. FIA says they quickly cut off the illegitimate access once discovering the incidents, but damage had already been done.

As the data watchdog for motorsports, FIA notified both Swiss and French privacy regulators about the breach due to their international operations. They also reiterated commitments to data protection and bolstering security defenses. However, specifics on incident response have been sparse so far.
There are questions that are still unanswered. For instance, when exactly the phishing attacks took place, how long data was exposed for, what type of personal details were at risk, and approximately how many individuals may have had their information accessed without consent.
