The Exchange Variation is characterized by the following move order: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Bxc6 dxc6 If black tries to attack the knight after the moves 5. O-O f6 6. d4 exd4 7. Nxd4 with the move 7...Bc5, he falls into a trap which costs him the dark-squared bishop. The second popular trap that can arise out of the Exchange Variation appears if black decides to castle long side after the moves 5. O-O Qf6 6. d4 exd4 7. Bg5 Qd6 8. Qxd4 Bd7 9. Nc3 Ne7 10. Qe3.
