A few follow up points I forgot to include:
1) The Volvo XC90 I found was a T8 hybrid version, but they are due a big service after 7 years. The example I found (priced at £30K) was overdue this service, so if I had purchased it, the first service would have cost me circa £1500. All the others I found were outside of my budget.

2) Other vehicles I considered are the BMW X5 xDrive45e, but these are still very expensive as I wanted a fairly new model with the electronic dash. There are slightly cheaper ones with smaller battery, but why compromise? I also looked at the Audi eTron - you can pick these up for around 22K now and they are lovely, but they are Audi's first generation EV and suffer from poor range and various other issues (such as software glitches and random shutdowns), also they just don't seem very big (remember the poor dog has to get in the back!).

3) My suspension issues could probably have been discovered before I bought the car if I had got the vehicle inspected - this would have given me more leverage with the dealer I bought it from, unfortunately I was in a situation where I didn't have the time to book an appointment and wait for the report. I went into this transaction on the understanding that there were probably going to be some additional costs incurred. If you want the peace of mind then maybe book an inspection with the AA or RAC or other reputable company. The point of this video though is to warn you of the potential additional pitfalls - if you are happy with that then you can probably forego the inspection. Overall I am not that bothered as I felt like I got the car for a good price and you have to take some risk when buying a high mileage car.
