On September 30, Slovakia holds a parliamentary election that will have ramifications far beyond its borders. The vote will indicate whether opposition to helping Ukraine could take hold in the Slovakia and European mainstream, analysts say.
Opinion polls indicate a return to power for Robert Fico who has vowed to halt Slovak arms deliveries to Ukraine. Former PM Fico has also denounced sanctions against Russia and railed against Nato, despite his country’s membership in the alliance. Fico has compared a NATO battlegroup in Slovakia to Nazi soldiers and described the Ukraine war as a conflict between the US and Russia. The Slovakian opposition leader has also said Ukraine being allowed to join NATO would guarantee World War III.
