A day at the slurry with three generations of McCleans. Some lessons in life are better taught early so John takes advantage of his first day out on the 7810 to teach his kids about being streetwise around the slurry and slurry equipment - lets face it... they won't learn these kind of lessons sat in the house. It wasn't staged when Leslie leaned into the back of the cab on the pump tractor because this is the real world where these things happen - humans take risks. The camera was running anyway and John got the shot but what should be done with it? What would you do with it? Do we pretend stuff like this doesn't happen countrywide and bury the shot? The opening scene is usually the place to hook someone with a sensationalist clip so this was an obvious choice to get your attention and it did, or you wouldn't be reading this. The shaft is dangerous, guarded or unguarded, but it's not dangerous if you chose to stay away from it - period. Ideal world all the shaft covers in this video would be fixed. John is a fan of guards being perfect particularly on stationary machines (like a tanker being filled in the yard, diet feeder, etc). Real world though is a borrowed machine isn't always maintained the way you'd like it. The simple practice of never going near any shaft often means a machine is still safe enough to operate remotely (eg vac / pressure lever was hydraulic on the tanker). John made the decision that more kids on Youtube would learn basic 'but essential' safety lessons through watching this video when he weighed it up against any harm caused by watching a spinning shaft rotating, captured from a safe distance through the lens of a camera. Right or wrong that was his choice and this video shouldn't be interpreted as an example of best practice, but rather 'how to be safe in the circumstances you find yourself'. How much do we assume safe practice at the top of the queue for everyone? - it's not even though it should be. What we do here isn't specifically about promoting farm safety, it's about documenting farm realities and at FarmFLiX we try not to hide away from how things are, vs how they should be. Harsh words about safety are best delivered by a loved one. Why don't you show this to the person in your life who would risk getting near a shaft and tell them how much you'd miss them in your life if they didn't make it home. https://www.farmflix.tv/
