George Inness (May 1, 1825
George Inness (May 1, 1825 – August 3, 1894) was a prominent American landscape painter known for his ability to depict atmosphere, mood and emotion through his paintings.
His paintings are very unique and few artists seem to have been able to produce some atmospheric displays. He was a figurehead of what is known as the tonalist movement.
One of the most influential American artists of the nineteenth century, Inness was influenced, in turn, by the Old Masters, the Hudson River school, the Barbizon school, and, finally, the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, whose spiritualism found vivid expression in the work of Inness's maturity (1879–1894).
Within his own lifetime, art critics hailed Inness as one of America's greatest artists.
