The purpose of fasting is to allow the body to use its stored calories, such as glucose and fat, which is beneficial for weight loss and managing type 2 diabetes. If one consumes excessive calories after fasting, the body will store these extra calories as fat, thereby hindering progress. Early studies on fasting were flawed because they often allowed unrestricted eating after fasting periods, leading to negative results. Dr. Fung highlights the importance of breaking fasts gently and maintaining a balanced diet to achieve the desired benefits. He also clarifies that the body will use fat stores before breaking down muscle, debunking myths about muscle loss during fasting. Later, Dr. Fung dives into how insulin plays a crucial role in weight management by regulating lipolysis, the process of breaking down fat. When insulin levels are high, typically due to a high-carb, low-fat diet, the body cannot access stored fat for energy despite a caloric deficit. This forces the body to lower its metabolic rate to match the reduced caloric intake, negating the expected weight loss. Conversely, lowering insulin levels allows the body to utilize stored fat, maintaining a higher metabolic rate and facilitating weight loss. Understanding this balance between insulin levels, caloric intake, and metabolic rate is vital to effective weight management.
